-Sinopec Announces Major Sichuan Basin Shale Gas Discovery: First Breakthrough in Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation

BEIJING, Oct. 24, 2022/PRNewswire/ -- Sinopec Southwest Oil

The Sichuan Basin is made up of two main formations, Longmaxi and Qiongzhusi. Major exploration and production activities have been carried out in the former, such as China's first deep-sea shale gas field, Weirong, while Qiongzhusi has the greatest potential for future exploration. The breakthrough will provide a strong impetus to expand shale gas exploration and development from the single formation to reach new formations and reservoir types, and will help build a national natural gas (shale gas) reserve with 100,000 million cubic meters of capacity in the Sichuan and Chongqing region.

Sinopec Southwest has abandoned the traditional method of searching for shale gas in organic-rich black shale and established new screening standards for Cambrian shale beds, discovering the target layer of silty shale gas exploration . Faced with the challenges posed by the thin shale layer, the large difference in longitudinal stresses, and the difficulty of scaling, the company has launched a new fracturing process and fracturing fluid system to achieve fracturing transformation into various stages.

Over the past decade, Sinopec Southwes has made progress in oil and gas exploration and development, with major achievements such as the completion of the world's first ultra-deep, high-sulfur reef gas field, the Yuanba gas field, and the identification of China's first deep shale gas field, the Weirong shale gas field. The company has commissioned new reserves of more than 100 billion cubic meters, such as the Hexingchang Xujiahe, Yongchuan Longmaxi and Jingyan Qiongzhusi formations. Its annual production of natural gas has gone from 2,820 million cubic meters in 2012 to 8,001 million cubic meters in 2021, with an accumulated production of 52,950 million cubic meters, which makes the subsidiary the largest producer of natural gas in Sinopec Group.
