The library of the Bundeswehr-Uni launches new lending concept

You can see it already in entrance area, where staircase is screwed up in a light-flooded room: The new University Library in so-called stag beetle Building of Bundeswehruni in Neubiberg presents itself bright, modern and airy. From workplaces in front of floor windows it is safe to study with a view of green. But library is not only architecturally new. The library system has also been updated to a modern level: for example, all books are sorted centrally. The company has been operating normally again since September 18th, and library is also accessible to external users. This Thursday institution is officially inaugurated by university President Merith Niehuss.

It has long been dragging until everything is as it is now. First plans were already 2003. The reconstruction itself lasted for about six years, as library director Maria Mann-Kallenborn reported. The relocation of part 100 of Stag beetle Building, in which library was previously housed, in now refurbished, adjacent part 200, however, lasted only four weeks. "That ran smoothly," says Thomas Pieruschka, deputy director.

Unlike before, all media are now centrally located in University library. Now re are no sub-libraries on campus more like before. The media was a challenge, according to library managers. The central room concept also serves goal of being able to use personnel more effectively. With sub-Libraries and opening hours of most of 8-8pm, this was sometimes difficult, says Pieruschka. The new concept also brings advantages for users. "In past, you might have had to search in three or four libraries, now only in one," says Mann-Kallenborn. On 4800 square meters and three levels, library offers 378 000 media directly on shelf. They are sorted by subject areas-from all as general reference works to VWW as administrative science.

That's not all. Including media in magazine, facility has a physical inventory of 1.2 million media-electronic coming yet. Thus she moves in League of university libraries in Bayreuth and Eichstätt. "With us, however, relationship between media and students is better," says director. While in Neubiberg about 2800 young people are studying, re are about 13 300 in Bayreuth.

The library's media offer is based on needs of faculties. If, for example, a study course readdeds, like a while ago psychology, corresponding literature is acquired. In building 33 There are also particular stocks, especially former military area library.

Not only overall concept, but also lending system has been updated. For now, students can borrow media not only at service counter, but also conveniently at self-booking terminals. For example, you can order a book about OPAC system from magazine and find it later in Selbstabholerregal. In order for this to be possible, employees have glued new, special labels, so-mentioned RFID tags, to all books. "We are first Bavarian University library that has provided RFID tags for all your free-hand stock," says Pieruschka.

It is not only possible to borrow books in new library, but also to learn in peace and with modern technology. About 300 learning and working places at simple white tables are available, all equipped with power supply and WLAN access. If you prefer to learn toger with ors, you can retire to one of small group rooms. A lot of glass and view into green create a pleasant atmosphere.

All se amenities are of benefit to students and scientists at university, but also to external users. Anyone can read here who lives in Munich S-Bahn area, can also apply for a card and borrow media. According to ladders, library currently has about 8000 users, 35 percent of m are external. "These can be students, but just as scientists from or universities that will find us," says Mann-Kallenborn. Only recently, an external one of m found a specific reference work for civil engineers, which he had sought in vain elsewhere.

According to library management, changeover worked well, and group rooms were also accepted. "We can be satisfied," says Mann-Kallenborn. Of course also because desired central room concept was implemented. The next challenges are waiting. Digitisation and conservation will keep library staff busy.
