Police officer fatally shoots man at end of nine-hour hostage standoff in Kent

KENT, Ohio -- A police officer fatally shot a man at the end of a nine-hour hostage standoff at a Kent apartment complex, police said.

Christopher Carter, 27, was killed Sunday night at the end of the standoff at the Silver Meadows Boulevard apartment building. Carter held a woman at knifepoint during the incident, police said.

Neither the woman nor any police officers were seriously harmed during the standoff, Kent police Lt. Mike Lewis said Monday.

Officials have not identified the officer who shot Carter and declined to say if the officer was placed on leave. Lewis also declined to say if the officer was a Kent police officer or a member of the SWAT team that assisted with the standoff.

Kent police officers went to the apartment building about 12:30 p.m. Sunday to investigate possible drug activity. When the officers attempted to make contact with Carter, he pulled out a knife and took the woman hostage in a laundry room, police said.

Metro SWAT team members negotiated with Carter for approximately seven hours before they rescued the woman about 9 p.m., Lewis said.

Carter was shot at some point during the rescue attempt, but Lewis declined to elaborate on the circumstances that prompted the shooting.

BCI investigators recovered a knife at the apartment complex while investigating the shooting Sunday evening, BCI spokeswoman Jill Del Greco said.

Officer-involved shooting investigations can take several months to complete, because toxicology and autopsy reports must be finished before a prosecutor's office can review the case, Del Greco said.
