NHL names LGBTQ ambassadors for each team; Andrew Shaw to represent Canadiens

The NHL has partnered with the You Can Play Project, an organization that works with LGBTQ athletes, to name a You Can Play ambassador for each of its 30 teams.

The ambassador on each team will be “a leader in the locker room and in the community on diversity, equality and inclusion,” according to an NHL release.

Defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk will be the Blackhawks’ ambassador but of note is Andrew Shaw’s inclusion as the ambassador for the Canadiens. Shaw was suspended for one game during the playoffs last season when he was on the Hawks for directing an anti-gay slur at an official. Shaw later apologized for his actions.

The ambassadors are part of a larger NHL effort to promote inclusion in the game during February, which the league is calling “Hockey is for Everyone” month. The campaign will also include programs and events designed to highlight a place in hockey for people with disabilities and people from different socio-economic statuses and ethnicities.
