TAMPA -- The Yankees called outfield prospect Billy McKinney up to major league camp Sunday, two days after Tyler Austin learned he'd miss the next six weeks with a broken foot.

Here's what you need to know about McKinney:

Rebuilding value: The 24th overall pick in 2013 by the A's, McKinney's star has dimmed. Coming out of high school, McKinney was considered to have exceptional hitting ability and was expected to develop at least average power. It hasn't happened. He's dealt with injury, particularly a hairline fracture in his left knee that ended his 2015 season.

On the come up: The Yankees acquired McKinney from the Cubs as the secondary piece in a package of prospects that moved Aroldis Chapman to Chicago. Shortstop Gleyber Torres was the headliner.

What's he done lately: McKinney scuffled in 2016, hitting just .426 with four homers and 44 RBI in 123 games at Double-A.

A reason for optimism?: In his last 14 games, McKinney seemed to turn it on, hitting .283 with a homer and an .819 OPS. Here's what Yankees vice president of player development Gary Denbo told MLB.com in October:

"He had issues with his knee and didn't have all his balance and stability in his lower half, which makes it difficult to be a consistent hitter," Denbo said. "He's just now getting healthy. He's working very hard to improve his timing and lower-half stability, and also to let his raw power play in games. He started to do that late in the season and he has been one of our best performers down here."

Where he'll start in 2016: Probably Double-A Trenton.
