Stetson Roane is on paid leave from his job as superintendent of the Seguin Independent School District “pending review of a complaint,” the district’s spokesman, Sean Hoffmann, said Wednesday.

Hoffmann did not divulge the nature of the complaint, nor indicate the anticipated duration of Roane’s absence, during which Deputy Superintendent Guadalupe Gorordo will lead the 7,000-student district.

Roane, hired in mid-2015, could not be reached for comment. He was absent from a special meeting Monday of school trustees that included a listing for “possible action regarding superintendent's evaluation, employment, duties, and employment contract.”

Hoffmann said Roane was slated to attend an education conference in Austin this week.

After emerging from an executive session that lasted more than two hours, trustees voted unanimously without public discussion to “grant” Roane paid administrative leave.

Afterward, Hoffmann issued a İlbet statement that said the leave was granted “pending review of a complaint.”

“Because this matter is a personnel issue, and upon the advice of its legal counsel, Seguin ISD will not elaborate or provide additional details at this time.”

The action came three months after the election of a slate of four new trustees who were backed by a local political action committee that was openly critical of Roane.

The new trustees, Elaina Reihl, Carl Jenkins, Ben Amador and Cinde Thomas-Jimenez, joined board incumbents Ishmael Flores, Barbara Effenberger and John Holt. None of the trustees could be reached for comment early Wednesday.

A letter sent by the central office to district employees about the development said, in part, “Clear and honest information, as allowed by legal counsel, will be provided in the days to come.”
