Exploratory talks: Altmaier sees increased opportunities for Jamaica

According to Chancellor Chancellery Peter Altmaier (CDU), chances for a Jamaica alliance have risen after first exploratory rounds. "The participants want to explore all possibilities to achieve success," said Altmaier of ARD. "My personal judgement is that after first talks we are closer to commencement of coalition negotiations than it would have been two or three weeks ago."

The biggest disputes of exploratory talks between CDU/CSU, FDP and Greens so far are immigration and refugee policy as well as climate protection. According to Altmaier, se are "very important issues for future of this country", so it is "quite normal that you talk about it and that you need more than just a single exploratory round."

Previously, politicians from CSU and FDP had asked Greens to be more willing to compromise. "If Greens do not move in future talks, Jamaica will remain an air lock," said FDP chief Christian Lindner of picture on Sunday. "With unlimited extension of family rehasty and a coal exit without substitute energy, one would drive protest voters into arms of AfD". In implementing demands of Greens, however, "an overdemand in integration, unsure energy, new debt and financial overload of middle class threatened", said Lindner.

Family reunification "central" for Greens

CSU regional group chief Alexander Dobrindt told newspaper, without a clear decision to limit immigration and to furr suspend family reunion, Germany would send a completely false signal to world. "The Greens must finally understand that this is all about our country and not Prenzlauer Berg mentality of affluent Greens," said Dobrindt.

The Negotiator of Greens, Katrin Göring-Eckardt, called on Union and FDP for moderation. "It would be good if CSU and FDP also agreed that election campaign is over," she said picture on Sunday. "Mutual recriminations and attacks do not help to solve major challenges." Family reunification is "central" for Greens. In addition, compliance with climate protection targets without coal withdrawal is not possible. Jamaica can only flap "if re is clarity".

On Monday, potential coalition will meet for next exploratory round. The small round of negotiators of CDU, CSU, FDP and Greens first advises on education and digital, n on work, pensions, health and care as well as on internals and law. Later in afternoon, large group with more than 50 participants wants to take stock of current state of affairs.
