Manuela Schwesig does not want to become SPD chairman, at least not this year. Half a year ago this would not even have been worth a message, after all, SPD had just chosen Martin Schulz with 100 percent as boss. But now, in fall of 2017, it is quite a news that Mrs Schwesig, now prime minister in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, has declared her renunciation of candidacy. What does that mean? That it is quite serious about Martin Schulz.

He is, on this, all faithful confessions of past few days change nothing, a chairman on call. If SPD has anything to do with its existence as a possibly-so-straight-still-people's party, it must now direct all available forces to next election 2021. But not even most deluded among Schulz faithful believe seriously that he will n take anor one. With a chairman, however, who himself cannot or will not become a candidate, SPD has now made enough bad experiences thanks to Sigmar Gabriel.

So why not change? Above all, three arguments are heard from SPD. First, Martin fought so valiantly that he could not be cut off now. Second, "The base" is fully behind him. Thirdly, re is also a need for someone to shape transition.

Schulz fought valiantly-but what does that have to do with 2021?

The first argument is to say: true, Schulz fought not only bravely but brilliantly-but what does that have to do with 2021?
