Member Survey: 24,339 members in the SPD

The SPD has received thousands of new members before probable members vote on a renewed grand coalition. Between new year and deadline for vote on 6 February, 24,339 people joined Social Democratic Party of Germany, ir Secretary-General Lars Klingbeil, after deadline of 18 o'clock, tweeted. This would allow a total of 463,723 Social Democrats to vote on proposed coalition agreement with Union.

Before consultation with CDU and CSU, SPD had announced that a possible coalition agreement would be presented to members for voting. Opponents of a renewed grand coalition, especially chairman of Young Socialists, Kevin Kühnert, had subsequently campaigned for new members with slogan "Enter, say no", in order to reach a veto of party base. Kühnert claimed membership growth for his association: "In all modesty: Jusos like to take a SPD toaster for special services to membership development of our party," he tweeted.

However, it is only possible to vote who has entered party until 6 February 6pm and has been accepted by relevant local association and registered in Member Directory.

Madness! Since New year, 24,339 members have joined our party. The SPD thus has 463,723 members on key date for members vote. I'm glad you're all here!
