Hotel overnight stays in Spain soared 39.9% in September compared to the same month of 2021, reaching 35.9 million, compared to the 25.6 million overnight stays registered a year earlier, as reported on Monday by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

However, the data for September this year does not exceed that of September 2019, before the pandemic, when overnight stays in Spanish hotels amounted to 37.7 million.

Considering the origin, the overnight stays of travelers residing in Spain reached 12 million, which represents 33.5% of the total, while those of non-residents were above 23.9 million.

In the case of overnight stays made by Spaniards, the figure for September this year does exceed that of the September before Covid (11.5 million), but the same does not happen with those made by foreigners, since in September 2019, Before the pandemic, they made 26 million overnight stays.

According to Statistics, the average stay increased in September of this year by 5.3% compared to the same month in 2021, standing at 3.3 overnight stays per traveler.

During the first nine months of this year, overnight stays in Spanish hotels have multiplied by more than two compared to the same period in 2021, to a total of 256.5 million, but they do not reach pre-pandemic values, since there are 20.7 million overnight stays less than between January and September 2019.

Regarding prices, the annual rate of the Hotel Price Index (HPI) stood at 13.3% in September, the same as in August and 2.8 points less than in September 2021. With the rebound in September, the prices of Spanish hotels chain 16 consecutive months of increases.

The average daily turnover of hotels for each occupied room (ADR) was 107.2 euros in September, which represents an increase of 14% compared to the same month in 2021.

For its part, the average daily income per available room (RevPAR), which is conditioned by the occupancy registered in hotel establishments, reached 78.9 euros, with a year-on-year increase of 41.4%. This is the highest median income for a month of September since the series began in 2008.
