Spain's economic confidence slips from the rebound in the EU and falls to almost two-year lows

MADRID, 29 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Spain's economic sentiment indicator (ESI) fell in November to its lowest level since February 2021, according to data published by the European Commission, in contrast to the rebound registered both in the euro zone and in the whole of the European Union, where the indicator has risen for the first time since last February.

In the case of Spain, the ESI stood at 96.4 points in November, compared to 98.1 the previous month, which represents the largest drop in data among the main EU economies and the worst reading of the indicator since February 2021.

The deterioration in economic confidence in Spain reflects the worsening observed in industry, with a drop to -7.7 points from -4 in October, the lowest reading since December 2020.

Likewise, confidence has also fallen in the retail trade sector, with a result in November of -5 points, compared to -2.1 in the previous month, while in construction it has gone from 13.5 points in October at 12.5 in November.

On their side, the confidence of Spanish consumers has improved slightly, with a reading of -28.7 points from -31.6 of the previous month, while in the services sector it has risen to 7.3 points, compared to the October 4.7.

At the European level, the ESI has improved in the EU and in the euro zone for the first time since last February, reaching a reading of 92.2 and 03.7 points, respectively, with a rise of one point in both cases. for the month of October.

In the EU, the indicator's rise in November was driven by a pick-up in consumer confidence, which offset worsening industry confidence, while data for services, retail and construction remained broadly unchanged.

Among the largest economies of the 27, the ESI increased considerably in Italy (4.1) and, to a lesser extent in the Netherlands (1.2) and Germany (1.1), while it moderated in Spain (-1. 7) and France (-1.6). In Poland it has remained practically flat (0.3).
