A fatal crash involving a Waukegan High School student in Zion on Saturday, Feb. 4, appears to have been caused by the student failing to stop at a stop sign and excessive speed, according to police.

Malik Brown was driving a 2017 Nissan Sentra occupied by five individuals ranging in ages 16 to 20 and was traveling west on Carmel Boulevard at 12:30 a.m. Saturday when it entered the intersection with Galilee Avenue without stopping for a stop sign, according to a statement released Tuesday by the Zion Police Department.

The Sentra then made an evasive maneuver to try and avoid another vehicle that was traveling southbound on Galilee, and that caused Brown to lose control of the vehicle, according to the report. Brown's vehicle went off the roadway about 150 feet west of the intersection and hit a tree hard enough to cause extensive damage, the report added.

"Speed was a contributing factor in this accident," the report stated.

Brown had to be extricated from the vehicle by Zion Fire Department personnel, and he was flown to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, police report. Three other passengers were also transported to area hospitals and were listed in stable condition, according to police.

The two occupants of the vehicle that Brown swerved around were not injured and stopped after the crash, according to the report, which added that the incident remains under investigation by Accident Investigation Unit of the police department.

Brown, a sophomore, played basketball and football for Waukegan High School, and Saturday's basketball game was canceled because of Brown's death, said Nicholas Alajakis, spokesman for Waukegan School District 60. Alajakis added that counselors were made available to the team and coaches, and counselors were also available at the school on Monday.
