Income: Full job and still scarce at checkout

About 18 percent of employees with full-time jobs earn less than 2,000 euros gross. In the new federal states, the share is twice as high as in the old.

Income: Full job and still scarce at checkout

Almost 3.7 million people who work every week up to 40 hours earn less than 2,000 euros gross per month. This is 17.7 percent of all full-time employees in Germany who are socially insured, as Ministry of Labour has been reporting on a request from left.

The difference between East and West is particularly striking. For example, proportion of employees with a monthly salary of 2,000 euros in new federal states is twice as high as in old ones with 31.2 percent. "It is a scandal that in particular east continues to be so clearly suspended," said labour market spokesperson of Left faction, Sabine Zimmermann.

The highest proportion of full-time employees with such gross earnings is 36.7 percent in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This is followed by Saxony with 34.3 percent as well as Thuringia (34.1 percent), Saxony-Anhalt (33.7 percent) and Brandenburg (33.6 percent). The lowest proportion is in Baden-Württemberg with 12.4 percent and Hamburg with 12.8 percent.

Because of rising inflation and rising rents, it is not possible to reach a gross margin of under 2,000 euros, said Zimmermann. She demanded that federal government should commit itself to a furr approximation of wages. For example, minimum wage must be increased from 8.84 euros to 12 euros. Federal Minister of Workplace Hubertus Heil (SPD) had pointed out on Friday that independent Mindestlohnkommission in summer will present proposals for increase planned for beginning of next year. These would n be implemented.

A few days ago, a paper from Union-related Hans-Böckler Foundation concluded that Mindestlohnempfänger in 19 of 20 largest German cities may have to increase with Hartz IV in order to make ends meet. Stefan Sell, professor of economics, social Policy and social sciences at campus Remager of University of Koblenz and director of Institute for Social Policy and labour market Research (ISAM), said time online: "In my view re would be good Reasons for an increase. " But because legislators only do so within strict limits and in accordance with precisely defined Regelnerlaube, demand is now in beginning. "If you wanted to be cynical, you could say that we could also save ourselves debate."
