The food disco under Aldi Nord wants to build 2,000 apartments in Berlin. As company has pointed out, it plans mixed real estate in 30 locations consisting of rented flats with an affiliated Aldi branch. Aldi intends to make use of centrally located land within S-Bahn ring, which already has shopping markets. This is to make areas more efficient.

"Building land storey is actually a waste of space," World quoted Jörg Michalek, managing director of Aldi Real Estate management, who presented two projects in Berlin districts of Neukölln and Lichtenberg. According to its own specifications, Aldi Nord has already begun construction of two branches and a total of 200 connected apartment. Anor 15 sites were planned.

According to world, re is a 30 per cent share of housing. These are to be rented to 6.50 euros per square metre net cold. Also for or apartments no more than ten euros are demanded net cold. This price level is below what is currently common in market in many places.

How residential buildings are to be used is still negotiable. "We are completely open re," said a spokeswoman from Aldi Nord. Student housing and social housing are just as conceivable as rooms for daycare centres and nursing homes.

Aldi expects that by 2030 about 300,000 people will move to Berlin as well as 90,000 people to outlands of capital. The Berlin Senate estimates demand for 194,000 residential units up to 2030 in order to catch up on influx and to stop cost increase in real estate prices and rentals.
