Aims to adapt green hydrogen as an alternative energy
AHMEDABAD, India, Nov. 30, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- As world leaders gather in the United Arab Emirates for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 28) from Nov. 30 to Dec. 12, 2023 , Adani Total Gas Ltd. (ATGL), a leading urban gas and power distribution company, co-promoted by Adani Group and TotalEnergies, announces the initiation of a pioneering 'Green Hydrogen Blending Pilot Project'.
As part of the project, ATGL will employ the latest technologies to combine green hydrogen (GH2) with natural gas for over 4,000 residential and commercial customers in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. GH2 is produced by electrolysis of water with electricity generated from renewable energy. Blending hydrogen consumes less carbon than burning gas, but has the same heating capacity.
The project is expected to come online in the first quarter of FY24-25 and the percentage of green hydrogen will gradually increase in the mix up to 8% or more, depending on regulatory approvals. After successful completion of the pilot, the hydrogen-blended fuel will gradually be supplied to larger areas of the city and other areas under license from AGTL. According to studies, a mixture of up to 8% hydrogen can reduce emissions by up to 4%.
With this pilot, ATGL would like to partner with various stakeholders, including regulatory authorities, to share its first-hand learning and develop an ecosystem on hydrogen blending in urban gas distribution in India. This will also help in acquiring and sharing knowledge on the operational aspects and compatibility of blended fuel in existing infrastructure.
