My 2023 predictions on the provincial scene

There will be no general elections in Quebec in 2023, but the coming months will have some nice surprises in store for us.

So here are my predictions for the next year:

Recession and inflation

The economic situation does not look rosy in 2023. The recession is upon us and inflation will not decrease enough to completely relieve our portfolio. We know that tax cuts must be there in the next Legault budget, but don't be surprised if new checks end up in the mailboxes by the end of the year.

Quebec Liberal Party

The Liberal Party of Quebec must elect its new leader within the next year. At this time, it would be surprising to see a race with multiple candidates. Since the departure of Dominique Anglade, there are several potential candidates who have closed the door. For his part, André Fortin, MP for Pontiac, did not officially say that he was going to be in the race, but he seems to want to take up the challenge. If Mr. Fortin takes the plunge, he risks being the favorite and winning top honors. Young, dynamic, grassroots deputy and former minister, Mr. Fortin has qualities that his opponents will not have.

By-election

There will be at least one by-election in 2023, namely Saint-Henri–Sainte-Anne. The departure of Dominique Anglade will thus force the Prime Minister to call a by-election by the spring. Ms. Anglade won with 2736 votes a slim majority for the party leader. Québec solidaire will want to put the gum to obtain a twelfth deputy in the Blue Room. Without a permanent leader in the PLQ, it won't be easy for the reds. Thus, a victory for Québec solidaire is easily conceivable. But Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois and his team will have to wake up. Because since the election, they seem to be on a day before.
