Josep Lluís Trapero: Catalan police chief under conditions free

He is accused of rebellion and seditious behavior: Spanish Public prosecutor's Office in afternoon heard Catalan police chief Josep Lluís Trapero and requested him to take him into custody. The accusations against chief of police are in connection with independence referendum of Catalonia on 1 October. The application was decided in evening: Trapero does not have to be in custody, but must not leave country and must report to court every two weeks.

The referendum was banned in September by Spanish Constitutional Court. Against Trapero, anor regional police representative and heads of two independence groups will be identified on 20 and 21 September on basis of ir roles during demonstrations in Barcelona. At that time, preparations for referendum were in full swing. The Spanish police attacked, arrested several Catalan regional representatives and searched offices.

While Trapero was released, judge ordered in evening to take heads of two independence groups into custody. Jordi Sanchez of Catalan National Assembly (ANC) and Jordi Cuixart of Omnio cultural should remain in custody for duration of investigations due to inflammatory behavior, ordered Supreme Court.

Ultimatum to Thursday

It is still unclear wher Catalonia has actually proclaimed independence or not. Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy had set a deadline until Monday morning for Catalan head of government Carles Puigdemont to answer this question. But Puigdemont expressed himself vaguely and instead demanded a postponement shortly before end of ultimatum.

For days Puigdemont has been looking for a conversation with Rajoy. But central government in Madrid refuses to mediate. It threatens with "hard measures", Puigdemont should not make clear by Thursday at latest that he has not proclaimed independence.

In his written ultimatum, Rajoy called Article 155 of Constitution. This allows, among or things, disempowerment of leadership of each of 17 autonomous communities of EU country, which ignores constitution.
