The investigations of US special investigator Robert Mueller on Russia affair led to a prison sentence for first time. A court in Washington sentenced Dutch lawyer Alex van der Zwaan for false statements to 30 days imprisonment and a fine of $20,000 (16,300 euros). He is said to have lied to federal investigators about President Donald Trump's former campaign chief Paul Manafort. The prison sentence should deter ors from lying in this internationally important investigation, said district Judge Amy Bernan Jackson.
The 33-year-old was guilty in February and cooperates with investigators. According to his admission, he lied among or things about his contacts with lobbyist Rick Gates and a suspected former Russian secret Service agent.
Gates worked in 2016 for a time in leadership of Trump's campaign team under n-election campaign chief Manafort. Both are also under indictment due to Mueller investigation. Gates pleaded guilty in two counts in February and works toger with investigators like Van der Zwaan. Manafort, on or hand, has a guilt.
This is mainly about lobbying for former Prorussian head of government of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, before its fall in 2014. Van der Zwaan worked in London for international law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher Flom. On mediation of Gates and Manafort, he was involved in PR work for Yanukovych government. The accusations of Manafort and gates are also related to earlier lobbying for Yanukovych.
Van der Zwaan also admitted that he had told truth about his contacts with a presumed former Russian intelligence agent. According to US media, "person A" is about Konstantin Kiliminik, who was stationed in Ukrainian capital Kiev in 2016. Kilimnik himself said, according to reports, he had also been in contact during Manaforts and Gates ' activity for Trump's campaign team on both.
