Inappropriate relationship: charges leveled against senior CAF officer

Lt. Gen. Steven Whelan was charged Wednesday with two counts by the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service (CFNIS) over an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate member.

The senior officer has been charged with "two counts of conduct to the prejudice of good order and discipline, pursuant to section 129 of the National Defense Act", it was indicated on Wednesday in a press release transmitted by the Ministry of National Defence.

The military police investigation, however, would not have found evidence to bring a criminal charge against the lieutenant-general.

"The case will be heard through the military justice system and no further information can be released at this time," he said.

Steven Whelan had served as the head of military personnel command before being fired in October 2021 over an allegation of sexual misconduct.

This accusation is therefore in addition to other allegations of sexual misconduct in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), where numerous investigations are ongoing.
