Syria: The West bears a complicity

The expulsion of Russian diplomats because of the Skripal case went fast. But a poison gas attack like that in Ostghuta remains without political consequences. Why?

Syria: The West bears a complicity

This was quick: it was only a joint statement by Heads of Government of England, France, Germany and United States, as well as full solidarity of all EU foreign ministers, n sanctions and now mass expulsion of Russian diplomats. This is not about reaction to recent poison gas attack in Syria at weekend, but those on poisoning of Russian ex-spy Sergei Skripal in UK. A reaction that has to act like a blow to people of Syria.

Despite adverse circumstances, doctors and human rights activists are tirelessly trying to send photos and videos of chemical weapons use: images that show how whole families were killed, lifeless bodies, dead children with foam in front of ir mouths. Helpers try to recover dead in midst of chaos and to provide injured people. Despite furr heavy bombardment by Russia and Syrian regime, human rights activists are venturing into war zones with ir cameras to secure evidence. For years, y have unsuccessfully appealed to west to at least do something about use of weapons of mass destruction.

Hundreds of less fatal cases of attacks with chlorine gas have been documented, along with those with poison gas sarin, including two particularly devastating attacks in suburbs of Damascus 2013 and in Chan Scheichun 2017. At that time, red lines set by West were exceeded. But, while in case of Russian spies, it did not even need plausible evidence to take political immediate action, in Syria's own clear evidence, researched by independent investigative commissions, does not mean that West Policies. The report by UN and OPCW, which unequivocally blamed Syrian regime for use of sarin with over 80 deaths in Chan Scheichun? Simply skipped.

There is enough political sanction

The West makes it easy for both perpetrators and ir accomplices who cover acts on an international stage. First of all, Russia, which not only prevented Enlightenment of worst crimes in Syria for years, but even vetoed continuation of independent investigation of OPCW and UN after it became clear that ir results in Moscow did not Would like to find.

Options for political action beyond military intervention, west and Germany have always been in relation to Syria: Germany could put plans with Russia on ice for anor Nord Stream pipeline, until Moscow at least to curb se The worst Forms of war crimes. Berlin could immediately raise staff of Federal prosecutor's Office so that world legal principle could at least pursue massive war crimes in Syria in this country. Or it should be noted that any financial support for reconstruction in Syria, wher from Federal Republic or European Union, is linked to punishment of those responsible for massive crimes against humanity.

The fact that Western States can act quickly, y have shown with expulsion of diplomats in case of Skripal. By not even taking steps to punish perpetrators in Syria and to increase pressure on those who cover se crimes, West is complicit in any furr use of poison gas. Not only Syrian regime has long understood news of West: Even in case of poison gas crimes, you have nothing to fear.
