Better access to free legal services in Quebec

The adoption of Bill 34 should improve access to justice in Quebec, believes an association for the defense of consumer rights.

The Act to improve access to justice by improving the offer of free or low-cost legal services will significantly contribute to improving access to justice, assures Options consommateurs.

The association specifies that this law, sponsored by the Minister of Justice, Simon Jolin-Barrette, will allow lawyers who work in non-profit organizations to give legal advice and represent people in need. Also, it will no longer only be a question of the latter providing legal information.

“For many consumers who contact us, the legal information we provide is sufficient to help them obtain a solution to their conflict with a merchant. However, we find that many of them would need more extensive legal services, legal advice or representation, which this law will allow us to do. This is a great step forward for access to justice, ”said Christian Corbeil, general manager of Option consommateurs, in a press release published on Friday.
