A platform based on artificial intelligence algorithms for energy optimization, software that reliably responds to power grid errors, electrodes for green hydrogen production, and a cross-refrigeration solution for thermal management problems have emerged to make in response to the demands of the energy sector.

The Red R D I Energy for Society (XRE4S) has brought more than 50 technologies from 41 research groups from 14 Catalan universities and research centers to the market.

The XRE4S programs offer support to the entire value chain and technology transfer, from advice on the protection of intellectual and industrial property to market studies, marketing strategies and research of potential licensees and investors.

Barcelona, December 19, 2022.- Four technologies from the R D I Energy for Society Network (XRE4S) have been set up as spin-offs with the aim of facing energy challenges, the result of the entrepreneurial spirit of researchers and the accompaniment of initiatives such as the Network, among others, which have put researchers in contact with companies and have offered specific market studies within the energy sector.

One of these initiatives is Bamboo Energy, a spin-off of the Energy Research Institute of Catalonia (IREC) that offers a platform based on artificial intelligence algorithms for energy optimization. This software, which aims to help promote a new decentralized and renewable energy model, is aimed at demand aggregators and new market agents so that they can manage energy demand efficiently and flexibly.

Jolt is a company of the Catalan Institute for Chemical Research that develops, manufactures and sells industrial electrodes for electrolysers and the production of green hydrogen. This technology differs from the competition because it uses a catalytic coating that improves the efficiency of the industrial electrode and also its strength.

Another of the technologies established as a company is eRoots, which arises from the CITCEA research group of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and which offers technologies to analyze, control and operate electrical networks with a significant presence of power electronics and alignment with the increase in the integration of renewable energies in the electrical system. Its first product is a software platform that reliably responds to power grid failures, as the calculation is performed accurately, efficiently, and at steady state.

The fourth technology is UniScool, a spin-off created by researchers from the University of Lleida that offers a transversal cooling solution for thermal management problems in power electronics, data centers, electric vehicles or photovoltaic cells.

These four companies intend to contribute to the energy transition by solving current problems in the production of hydrogen, in the integration of renewables into the networks, in the electricity market and in the thermal efficiency of electronic devices.

In addition to these four, there are currently two more technologies, one from the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and another from the University of Girona, which are in the process of setting up a spin-off. The Network has offered them a mentoring service with experts in the sector who have provided them with market advice, in addition to helping them with the marketing strategy, financing and protection of industrial property, as explained by Joana Tarrés, promoter of the XRE4S.

All these initiatives have arisen from the research carried out for years by Catalan researchers, who have found support in initiatives such as XRE4S, The Collider, or other entrepreneurship programs that aim to put researchers in contact with companies or create spin-offs. The Network also offers researchers specialized support in the energy sector, covering the entire value chain and technology transfer, from advice on the protection of intellectual and industrial property to market studies, marketing strategies and the search for possible licensees and investors.

More than 50 energy technologies from 41 Catalan research groups.

In total, the programs of the XRE4S -IP Services

The XRE4S, led by IREC, encompasses 41 research groups from 14 universities, technology and research centers in Catalonia. It brings together more than 500 researchers, who work in the areas of low-carbon technologies, electrical networks and distribution, and energy efficiency.

The director of the XRE4S, Marta Fonrodona, has highlighted that, currently, "the XRE4S is a transfer ecosystem between research and the productive and social environment in the energy sector, and is a key element to improve the competitiveness of the sector energy and the development of a low emission society". "We want to increase the impact of this transfer in the productive and social sector in Catalonia, and make it a pole of energy innovation on an international scale", she added.

The XRE4S is a project co-financed by the European Regional Development Funds of the European Union within the framework of the PO FEDER of Catalonia 2014-2020 and the support of the Secretariat for Universities and Research of the Department of Business and Knowledge of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
